Amid the escalation around Iran, the question is increasingly being asked: how comparable is the military potential of the parties to a possible conflict. An analytical study by the Experts Club center shows that formally comparing the armies of the USA, Israel, and Iran can be done by numbers, but the real balance is determined by technology, the ability to project power, and the quality of weapons.
The gap between countries turns out to be significantly deeper than it seems with a simple count of the army or equipment.
Military budgets and human resources: the numbers look different
Who spends more on defense
According to estimates by international research institutes, defense spending remains the main indicator of the strategic capabilities of states.
The USA allocated about 997 billion dollars for defense in 2024, making the American army the largest military system in the world.
Israel spent approximately 46.5 billion dollars, maintaining one of the most technologically advanced armies with relatively small resources.
Iran, despite regional ambitions, has a significantly smaller budget — about 7.9 billion dollars.
In terms of numbers, the situation looks different. The active forces of the USA exceed 1.3 million military personnel, in Iran there are about 610 thousand, while Israel relies on a compact regular army of about 170 thousand people, compensating for this with a powerful reservist system.
However, experts emphasize: modern warfare increasingly depends less on the number of personnel.
This is the factor regularly analyzed by the editorial team of NAnews — Israel News | Nikk.Agency, as current conflicts show a shift from mass armies to technological models of warfare.
Technology versus quantity: the key difference in armies
Ground forces and artillery
In terms of artillery, Iran looks impressive — almost 7 thousand artillery systems, which significantly exceeds Israel’s figures.
However, numerical superiority does not mean military advantage. Israel focuses on precision strikes, reconnaissance, digital fire control, and counter-battery systems.
In the tank component, Israel has more than 2200 tanks, while Iran has over 1500 units of armored vehicles.
The US army is traditionally assessed differently — through the structure of combat brigades. Only the armored brigades of the American army include almost 1400 Abrams tanks, not counting reserves and stockpiles.
Aviation as the main factor of superiority
It is air power that forms the decisive skew.
Iran has about 250 combat-capable aircraft.
Israel — about 339 combat aircraft, including modern F-35I Adir, F-15, and upgraded F-16s, integrated into a multi-layered defense system.
Only the US Air Force has more than 2000 fighter/attack class aircraft, and the total fleet of American aviation exceeds 5000 units.
In fact, we are talking about multiple technological superiority, especially in reconnaissance, operations management, and the range of force application.
Naval strategy and the nuclear factor
Oceanic power versus asymmetry
The naval strategies of the countries also differ fundamentally.
The USA has a global fleet of almost 300 warships, including at least 11 nuclear aircraft carriers, strategic submarines, and a developed supply system worldwide.
Iran, on the contrary, builds defense on asymmetric solutions: fast attack boats, naval mines, anti-ship missiles, and small submarines designed for operations in the Persian Gulf.
A separate element remains the nuclear factor. International studies classify Israel among the states possessing nuclear potential, although Tel Aviv does not provide official confirmation.
Iran officially does not possess nuclear weapons, but its nuclear program remains the main source of international tension.
The main conclusion: 21st-century war is not determined by the number of soldiers
The comparison shows an important trend in modern security: quantitative indicators increasingly do not reflect the real balance of power.
The USA remains the only country capable of conducting long-term military campaigns far beyond its own territory. Israel compensates for limited resources with technological advantage and a multi-layered air and missile defense system. Iran bets on missiles, drones, and a network of allied proxy structures.
It is the clash of these three models of military strategy that today forms a new security reality in the Middle East — where the decisive factor is not the scale of the army, but the ability to adapt to a new type of warfare.
